Defender 90 or 110: How to Choose the Ideal Adventure Companion

The Defender's iconic silhouette and legendary off-road capability have become a common sight on our roads. Its popularity is proof that it has won the hearts of enthusiasts everywhere. While its cutting-edge technology and utilitarian luxury are universally appreciated, one question often arises at the dealership: should you choose the agile two-door Defender 90 or the versatile four-door Defender 110? Of course, there is also the Defender 130, but that model is best suited to those who need maximum space.

Although they share the same powerful engines and D7x aluminum monocoque architecture, these two configurations are designed for distinctly different types of drivers. Here are the key specifications to help guide your decision.

Dimensions and Agility

The Defender 90 stands out with its short 2,587 mm (101.9-inch) wheelbase and overall length of 4,583 mm (including the spare wheel). These compact proportions make it exceptionally capable for extreme off-road driving while remaining highly maneuverable in urban environments.

Thanks to its architecture, the 90 outperforms the 110 in one critical off-road metric: breakover angle. With the adjustable air suspension, it achieves an impressive 31-degree breakover angle compared to 28 degrees for the four-door model. This significantly reduces the risk of scraping the underside when traversing sharp crests or large obstacles. Its tighter turning circle also makes navigating wooded trails and confined parking spaces much easier.

Space and Versatility

If your adventures involve passengers, luggage, or multi-day camping trips, the Defender 110 is the natural choice. Its wheelbase stretches to 3,022 mm (119 inches), with an overall length of 5,018 mm.

This added size translates directly into greater practicality and passenger comfort. The 110 offers flexible seating configurations for 5, 6 (with the front centre jump seat), or even 5+2 passengers thanks to an optional third row--although admittedly best suited for occasional use. The Defender 90, meanwhile, is limited to 5 or 6 seats, with more restricted access to the rear seats due to the absence of dedicated rear doors.

Behind the second row, the Defender 110 provides a generous 972 litres of cargo space, expanding to 2,277 litres with the rear seats folded. By comparison, the Defender 90 offers a more modest 297 litres behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,263 litres.

Choose According to Your Lifestyle

Mechanically, both models offer the same maximum towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) when equipped with the P400 six-cylinder engine or the V8 powertrain. Wading depth remains equally impressive at 900 mm.

Choose the Defender 90 if you're looking for a more dynamic driving experience, a purist design that pays tribute to the original model, and a vehicle primarily intended for solo adventures or life as a couple, especially if technical off-roading is part of the plan.

Opt for the Defender 110 if your vehicle needs to serve as a family hauler, if you require maximum cargo space for extended trips, or if the greater high-speed stability provided by a longer wheelbase better suits your highway driving habits.

Either way, choose the Defender for the sheer enjoyment it delivers. You won't be disappointed.
